Evolution R4 Steers Spirit of Yukoh Around the World in Vendée Globe Race

Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Raymarine’s Evolution R4 Autopilot system is going around-the-world in the most grueling sailing race of all – the 2016-2017 Vendée Globe.

Japanese skipper Kojiro Shiraishi chose Evolution to steer his boat Spirit of Yukoh for this edition of the legendary round-the-world, non-stop, single-handed race.

We had a chance to catch up with Kojiro just before the start of the race. He’s very excited to put the Evolution R4 Performance Tuned software technology to the ultimate test. In particular, Evolution R4’s new Wind and Navigation Data Stabilization capabilities will provide him the competitive edge to get his boat to the front of the pack. Watch the video below to learn more about Kojiro and his Evolution R4 system.

Kojiro Shiraishi is a veteran ocean racer with numerous circumnavigations under his belt. At age 26 he became the youngest sailor at the time to complete a solo round-the-world voyage. Kojiro also completed the 2003 Around Alone race, and the 2006 Velux Five Oceans race. Most recently he finished seventh place in the New York – Vendée transatlantic race.

The Vendée Globe racers departed on Les Sables d’Olonne, France on November 6th and are now mid-ocean, headed for the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa. In addition to Kojiro, Raymarine Pro Ambassador Alex Thomson is also competing in the Vendée Globe aboard his boat Hugo Boss.

We wish both of them the best of luck in completing this race that’s also known as The Everest of the Seas.
