Learn moreOur Raymarine Ambassador, Captain Moe Newman, along with her Journey South Outfitters team, relies on Raymarine and FLIR to deliver the ultimate fishing experiences – from the inshore marshes and bayous to offshore waters and rigs. Their adventures take guests from boat to table, offering a unique southern hospitality experience in Venice, Louisiana.
Raised on fishing, Moe Newman built her family pastime into one of the most successful inshore and offshore outfitters in Louisiana.
“I was born and raised fishing along the Gulf Coast with my mom and dad, and at about the age of 14, my dad took me under his wing.” - Moe Newman.
Captain Moe Newman grew up fishing the shores of the Gulf Coast. From the coastline of Pass Christian, Mississippi, to Port Fourchon, Louisiana, she was raised on the thrill of the catch, beginning her guiding career while still in her teens. Her father instilled in her a responsibility to learn everything about the sport. She looks back on her childhood, “If I wanted to go fishing, I better be a part of every aspect of it. There was no skirting by hopping on the boat…”
Moe Newman did learn everything about fishing and, later in life, she and her husband, Eric Newman, started Journey South Outfitters, one of the most reputable outfitters in Venice, Louisiana. The team, including Captain Eric Newman, excels in all aspects of fishing the area’s diverse species — from the inshore marshes and bayous to offshore waters and rigs. Providing a unique client experience, they go beyond expectations, planning every detail from the deck of the boat to the seat at the table. After a trip at sea, customers can get a taste of southern hospitality in homestyle lodging and a gourmet culinary experience.
Captain Newman and her company are a multi-species outfitter, equally at home fishing redfish, sea trout, cobia, red snapper, triple tail, grouper and dozens of other species. But Moe spends a good deal of time hunting large yellowtail tuna in the Gulf. She says her Raymarine Axiom Pro units cut the time it takes to find the right kind and size of fish. “I can get on a school of fish, and it’ll separate it for me to know that it’s a wad of bonita or blackfin, or tuna — and if it’s tuna, the size of the tuna just by the marks. That high CHIRP is so strong that it depicts what fish you’re on top of; it’s not just a red mark.”
She credits her Raymarine Axiom Pro units’ excellent mapping with helping her find fish. But besides getting to her fishing locations, she also relies on her electronics to stay safe no matter the weather conditions, with various technologies like precision GPS and mapping and HD Color Radar. “In rainy, stormy conditions, I’m not in open water; I’m off rigs that have buoys off of them. There’s a lot of obstructions even though I’m 40 miles offshore. And to be able to run FLIR [thermal imaging] helps me feel better protected.”
Overall, Captain Moe trusts the Raymarine reputation to support her business. “It’s very important for me to run the best of the best — and along with my boats, my Raymarine Axiom Pro and FLIR give me the comfort, security and confidence that I can get in and get out and be productive.”
