The Rods and Ribbons team pride ourselves on chasing the best fishing opportunities, and to do that safely and effectively, reliable marine electronics are essential.
Our 2006 Ocqueteau 615 was the perfect starting point for our next Rods and Ribbons ladies’ team fishing boat project. When we purchased her, the boat came fitted with outdated and non-functioning electronics, so a full refit was always part of the plan. We wanted to equip her with the very latest Raymarine technology from the start, giving the team a modern, reliable setup that would make every trip safer, smarter, and more productive.
At the heart of the refit is a new Raymarine Axiom2 Pro RVM display at the helm. This powerful multi-function display gives us total control over navigation, utilising Raymarine Lighthouse Charts; as well as displaying radar, sonar, and engine management interfaces. On the rear deck, we added an additional Axiom2 Pro RVM display to keep an eye on sonar and fish activity while we’re working lines, making it easier than ever to spot targets while staying hands-on with the action.
When you are upgrading fishing boat electronics, sonar and radar are also two essential tools to add to your fishfinder upgrade. The Raymarine Axiom2 Pro RVM and RVM-100 Transom Transducer's CHIRP sonar scanning capabilities have transformed how we locate fish and identify productive fishing grounds. With our Raymarine Quantum 24D radar, we can confidently navigate in poor visibility, whether that’s fog, rain, or night fishing. The Raymarine radar system also helps us locate our fishing friends out on the water, a huge advantage when fishing as part of a team.
Communication at sea is crucial. The Ray 90 VHF provides clear, reliable contact wherever we go. Knowing we can always call for help, and be found easily, gives us total peace of mind. The integrated AIS700 transceiver adds another layer of safety, allowing other vessels to see us in poor weather and letting family track our journeys in real time.
To complete the Raymarine fishing electronics upgrade, we installed AR200 Augmented Reality with two CAM300 cameras. The forward-facing camera enhances safety through augmented reality, by detecting and highlighting potential navigation targets. Meanwhile the rear camera lets us record all the fishing action on deck. These cameras don’t just improve situational awareness, they bring our adventures to life visually.
The next upgrade on our wishlist is a Raymarine autopilot system. For any fishing boat, autopilot offers massive benefits when maintaining a steady course during long runs to fishing grounds. It reduces fatigue for the skipper, improves precision, and makes solo or small-crew trips far easier and safer.
Adding an autopilot, such as the EV200 Power Pilot, would complete our Raymarine suite and make Rods and Ribbons even more capable and competitive.
With all these Raymarine upgrades, our once classic Ocqueteau 615 has been completely transformed. She now feels like a new boat; sleek, modern, and equipped with the very latest marine technologies.
The refit has given Rods and Ribbons the tools to fish smarter, navigate safer, and share our experiences in a whole new way. We couldn’t be happier with the results.
